Global Living/Learning Community…@ home in the world

This unique living/learning experience educates leaders for global engagement. The goal of this program is to help residents become citizens of the world by bringing the world into the community through intercultural awareness, leadership development, experiential learning, and an introduction to a variety of campus, community, and global resources. Global Community residents participate in numerous activities to explore current world events and international perspectives as they prepare for leadership roles as active global citizens.

The Global Living/Learning Community is a collaboration of Housing and Residential Life, Center for Leadership & Service, International Student and Scholar Services, Office of Study Abroad, and Office of Global Learning Initiatives.

The goal is to develop globally competent leaders who:

  • Exhibit awareness of one’s own cultural values, beliefs, attitudes, biases and stereotypes and the impact of these on others.
  • Acknowledge and respect the existence of different cultural values, beliefs and attitudes
  • Seek knowledge about world history, current events, global economics and sustainability
  • Recognize that people’s well-being is interconnected and globally interdependent
  • Accept responsibility for active world citizenship
  • Practice collective leadership methods that focus on inclusion, collaboration and crossing boundaries

Program benefits include:

  • Upon successful completion of the Global Living/Learning Community experience, residents will be awarded a Global Leadership Certificate, a valuable enhancement to your diploma and resume. Participation in the Global Living/Learning Community also applies towards the Center for Leadership & Service Advanced Leadership Challenge.

Program components include:

  • Bi-weekly community meetings featuring social events and guest speakers
  • Volunteer experience through a partnership with the Miami Council for International Visitors
  • Virtual leadership exchange with a university abroad
